A Pastoral Talk on Marriage (2 of 4)

Joseph Pittano, Mike Reidland

If you’re a Christian and you’re married, ever plan to marry, you counsel others in marriage, or even if you just want to hear some great reflection on many of the things that make for a good marriage in the Lord Jesus Christ, we sincerely hope you’ll join us for all four parts of this talk. I’m joined today in-house by Pastor Mike Reidland of Horizon Christian Fellowship to discuss both marriage and marriage counseling. Our goal is to discuss this as counselors with a primary focus on church members. We want to talk about things like the theology of marriage, biblical ideas that build marriage up, marriage counseling, our duties and roles in marriage as men and women, and a whole lot more.

We all know that marriage is difficult at times…no matter how much we love God. We’re sinners, what else can we expect? Take heart, believer, we’re all there at times. Lasting love takes work. It’s supposed to. I’ve been married for over 17 years now, and mike’s been married for nearly 39. We both know that marriage takes work. Because of this, we want to talk today about how marriage is one of God’s principal tools for sanctification in the lives of his people. We want to explain and show how it’s a major way God transforms Christians into the image of Christ. Marriage is a way we put sin to death, so marriage—for Christians—can be especially demanding. If our marriage was just about us and our needs, and not moreso about God’s glory and the death of our sin, marriage wouldn’t be so hard. But since we’re about Christ and each other, there are challenges in the war against our sin that are just necessary parts of marriage. We come to learn in time that we’re only able to handle a goldy marriage because of the grace that’s been given to us in Christ. It’s worth it. Love is like fine wine. It takes time, but it’s so very much worth it! We humbly pray this talk is a blessing to you.

If you need help in your marriage, or want to talk to someone about getting married, we encourage and invite you to reach out to one of your pastors or elders or to someone in your local church today who can love you and mentor you.
