A Talk with Vice Admiral (Ret.) William Dean Lee. Not Many of the Strong Are Called, but Some Are.
It was a genuine privilege today to chat with my new friend Will. Yes, it’ll always be very strange for me as a (former) junior officer and/or Army chaplain to ever refer to such a man on a first name basis, but I’ll force myself to do so…a little bit. I wanted to have him on the program today to ask him some questions from the word of God that a disciple of Christ with his levels of professional accomplishment is best fit to answer. We’ll consider the example of Namaan for a moment from 2 Kings 5:13 as we discuss what it’s like to be a man of high esteem in the church of Jesus Christ today. This subject was entirely my idea, not his. In considering Will’s life, we’ll have the ability to consider what we might learn from passages like 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 and James 2:1-5 in some unique ways. In these last two passages, Scripture tells believers, especially pastors, how to behave among men and women of higher social strata, but what we don’t get is the perspective of those from such who God has saved about how they view themselves in light of this. Paul writes plainly in 1 Corinthians 1:26 that “…not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble” are made Christians by God. That God himself (vs. 27) “…has chosen the foolish [and] weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong.” Everyone thinks that if God just saved the strong more would follow. What if Donald Trump was a Christian? Or Christian Hemsworth? Or Bill Gates? Then, everyone would want Jesus, right? What about an Admiral? It’s just not his M.O., Paul says. Few of the “mighty” believe. Look around you. James says be careful not to give preferential treatment in the churches to the powerful or wealthy if they come in. But that’s exactly what many churches do. James says that those who favor the potential “big givers” or “movers n’ shakers” have actually “become judges with evil motives.” James 2:4b. Today, we’ll have the rare opportunity of hearing from an unusual convert on some subjects in light of such things. I pray it’s the first of more conversations. We hope you’re blessed and spurred on well to serve God better in your life, wherever he’s called you to serve him. God is rich in mercy to all who call upon him.

-A simple YouTube search will also bring up a lot of public presentation material from the man. Among anything else you’d find from him online, I’d like to recommend to you the National Day of Prayer address that I briefly mention in our talk today: https://youtu.be/cUElogscP5c?si=xKpsLHzDQysn_DFW.
God bless!!!
