Eating and Drinking Jesus in John 6

Feb 27, 2026    Joseph Pittano

Jesus is the “bread of life.” This is one of his many unique titles. I believe this. I not only believe this, but I have been partaking of this bread now for over half my life. What does it mean to partake of Jesus as he said all men must do to have life in John 6:53 when he’s recorded as saying, “…unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves?” Have you partaken of the Son of Man? Are you currently partaking of him? If so, exactly how and when do you do so? It’s a pretty important question since he says if we don’t do this, we have no life in us, right? Is the context of this “eating and drinking” (vs. 53) found earlier in John 6:35 where he says, “…I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst?” Is coming and believing the eating and drinking or is Jesus talking about priestly ceremonies not even logically possible on the day he said this? Here’s my question, listeners: Could Jesus’ listeners that day “eat and drink” him at all in John 6? Could his disciples themselves on that very day do so or not? If your theology forces you to say no, respectfully, you have a wrong interpretation of what Jesus taught. Let’s talk about the meaning of this passage today specifically considering its possibility on this day in John 6, and what happens when someone inserts a later-developed priestly sacramentalism instead.

God bless!!!
