Seeing and Believing

God’s salvation does not depend on seeing a thing.

Life itself is an invisible force. No one can invent even a grain of sand from nothing. It’s all just here by divine fiat. Not a single human eye saw the heavens and the earth materialize, yet it’s all present.

Think of just how few people were alive during Jesus’ time in comparison to the whole of humanity before and after it. Think of how few among them were his disciples. And of them, think of how few there were who saw him after his Resurrection, his closest disciples. Yet in Revelation chapters five and seven we’re shown and innumerable host of his redeemed humanity and the preserved angels. 99.999999% of the people never saw him in their lives. Yet we all believe. God saves and saves big. Why is it after hearing the Gospel and when we read the Bible, we’ll change our lives to obey his commandments? John 14:15. How is it that our war with our sin proves our sonship to us? Romans 8:12-17. How is it we now delight in his righteousness imputed to us? Psalm 32:11. And strive to rejoice even in suffering? 1 Peter 4:13. How is it we hear while so many perish? 1 Corinthians 1:18.

If you look to the word of God and your heart reflects Peter’s confession so that you too can say to Jesus, “…You have words of eternal life” (John 6:68) then you’re as blessed as Peter in Matthew 16:17 that no one talked you into this. No one but God himself can give this sight! So, if you see him, you can know where it came from! You must be born again.

Seeing is not believing. Believing is seeing. “Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.” John 20:29. God’s gift of sight is sight itself. God’s plan for salvation obviously does not hinge upon us seeing him with our own eyes. It depends on him coming to us with the truth about the world we live in. Has he come to you? Do you believe the Gospel of Jesus’ Resurrection for your forgiveness? If so, you’ll do what all men do when he draws near. You’ll repent, you’ll believe, and you’ll live your life as he commands to the end as the delight of your warring soul.
