The Size and Scope of the Atonement (39 min)

Title: The Size and Scope of the Atonement (39 min)
Message Description:

I want to talk about what Revelation 21:1-5 means:

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

This is a forward glance. The Christian has a great future ahead. What Christ has done is not a joke. God plays for keeps. Jesus’ works being planned from before the world by the triune God to atone for sinners does not just bring any single offender from “red to black” in the ledger of his justice (though it does). If any creature ever asks God, “How dare you forgive them? How dare you bring in that new creation for them?!” God’s justified answer is, “Have you considered what Jesus did?! That is enough!” For the triune God, Jesus’ atonement is able to literally bring in a new heaven and new earth where righteousness dwells!

There is a cosmic size and an individual level to the atonement of Christ. Whenever a person is born again, they partake of something much larger than we often imagine. Let’s consider more of it tonight. And I hope it’s a blessing to you.

God bless!
