If you were accompanying the Christians across the known world in the first century and you entered a synagogue, where would you go in the Old Covenant’s 39 letters to demonstrate that the risen Jesus is the Christ? Could you do so? Where would you go first? Jesus taught his disciples that the Old Covenant pointed to him in ways so clearly that he once said to his most erudite detractors: “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” John 5:46-47. We need to know how this is so to get anywhere close to the full picture of the New Testament. Peter preached that an Old Covenant writer, “Looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay” in Acts 2:31. We see that Paul was constantly, “Explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.” Acts 17:3. It didn’t persuade everyone then, and it won’t persuade everyone now, but they weren’t preaching from the New Testament because they were only just writing the New Testament. They were preaching from the same Bible Jesus did. From our Old Covenant. Could you? Let’s talk about it.
