The human heart cannot be trusted. I thank God that he’s given his people tests in his word for us to see ourselves in the truth. We’re not left to wonder. Here, John gives his readers another test for them to do precisely what Paul tells some other readers to do elsewhere. “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?” 2 Corinthians 13:5. John is writing to educate Christians. He’s writing to strengthen Christians. May you be strengthened and educated today as we consider these passages together.
